There's a weird dichotomy going on in Oakland. This city (at least the west half) is full of savvy, eco-conscious, DIY types who live/work in artist live/work lofts and those that don't live/work where they live/work, ride their bicycle to work. The dichotomy here is that Oakland is still rough and tumble, and the potholes and construction going on is ridiculous. Recently, I decided to stop paying the man $75 a month to park my car at my job. So on my bicycle I went. Through the potholes, the sick exhaust, and the sweaty September heat I encounter tons of other bi-muters along the way. What I also encounter, is a rich cauldron of trashed Oakland streets better witnessed with a bird's eye view than that of those in a car. Sometimes you even get some extra instructions when following the rules the of the road.
After I did some pants dancing at the intersection, I looked down and noticed gold! I totally needed a new wifebeater...
Interestingly enough, this little dump was cleaned up by the next day. Go Oakland! Which just means, I'll be on the prowl all that much more for some sweet street treasures. Which reminds me...some schmuck moved into my building and decided he hadn't cleaned out the old place so well, and left a pile of golden treasures on the sidewalk in front of my stoop. Awesome because man, I really needed some new sculpture art.
Yes...that is a face carved into a foot. Looking good on top of my steam heater. Like it belongs there.
